Dress Up Day!

As you all know, Callum does't normally consent to being photographed, never minding posing for the camera, but for some reason yesterday he was in a posing mood!

It was all because of the hats and things I put in a little dress up box I made up for him (boy style - although there are a few of my handbags and necklaces in there too!) He would run through, grab something, and proceeded to run around with it on his head (Yes, handbags too)  Although he didn't exactly pose for me, he did stand still long enough - and generally in enough light thankfully - so I could get a shot of him, which for Callum, is saying something.

It was actually really lovely to have fun taking his picture and not worry about whether the depth of field was good, or whether my shutter speed was fast enough - I was just clicking away because we were playing a game with it. Callum had a blast - he enjoyed himself so much that I'm hoping he will start to see getting his photo taken as fun!

This one shows just how bad he is when asked to pose for the camera.  Cheese anyone?

There are actually more on the same vein, just different "accessories" so I thought I would stop there before I bore you too much with photos of my little cherub!

These were all taken with my Tamron 28-75mm at F2.8. I'm finding this to be a really great "everyday" lens - the focal range is great for indoors and the lens is pretty sharp (when you do finally nail focus on a crazed three year old) and it's not heavy at all, so for the relatively low price I love it.  I'm not sure how good this lens is going to be, focal length wise, on my full frame (6 sleeps and counting!) so we shall wait and see!

Anyway, I think these might be my favorite photos this month, as un-technically sound they are (some are slightly soft, some have bad light, and all have backgrounds that I would have changed!) but because they show his slightly crazy personality, the love of putting anything and everything on his head, and the fun we had together,  they are priceless.

Gorgeous photos, and I have the same problem with my little girl who doesn't seem to ever want to have her photo taken- in fact she says 'Mummy no photo' whenever I get my camera out- which is a shame as I have it out all the time. ;)

Do you have a macro lens? I am looking for my next lens for my camera, I only have a 50mm 1,8 which is my every day lens, and I love it but it doesn't get in close enough and I have another baby on the way so would love some close ups of hands/feet/eyelashes etc. Do you have any of reasonable value that you can recommend?

I have a nikon camera.

I don't currently have a macro, but have got the 100mm f2.8 macro on my list. Hard to recommend lenses without knowing your budget. If you can afford a dedicated macro lens, then the Nikon Nikkor 60mm f2.8 is meant to be good, best suited to a crop frame though I would say. . If you are a full frame camera, the 105mm Would probably suit you better. They are great for portraits too so not just limited to macro. You can also by a macro filter Which would fit over your 50mm f1.8 to allow it to take macro shots. It's a cheap and cheerful option, but have never used them. (I'm guessing you get what you pay for though) hope this helps!

audrey, the fifth photo made me truly smile inside and out. there's something about callum's smile in that one that screams "i'm having so much fun and love my mama!" to me.

katie, i want a macro too and shoot with a nikon d600. the 105 2.8g is the way to go in the nikon camp because it has vr. i'm trying to figure out if it'll focus fast enough for fast toddlers...i'd want to use it as my outside lens. i'm still researching that.

I think my budget is around £300-400 so unfortunately Jan that one is slightly out of my limit. It is hard as I want to get a new lens and add to my collection but I don't know which one I want. I think I want a macro because I do love the close up images, however I don't know whether I would be worth getting a zoom or something that I might get more use out of.

Hi Katie, I think we all struggle with this - and it's hard to advise because we all have different things we want to do! I think I'll do a feature on macro lenses and options soon, but not till the new year. VR is great, but you can manage without it but might need a tripod. You might also want to look at ones from Tamron and Sigma which are cheaper than their Nikon counterparts. If you get with a goog focal length for your camera it will double as a portrait lens too. The other option is of course to hire a macro to capture the newborn "bits" - you'll get a week hire pretty cheaply and invest in a zoom if you think you'll get more use from that over the longer term? So hard!!! P.s congratulations on having a baby on the way!

Audrey,

After going thru these comments, I thought of posing two relevant questions which have been haunting me recently....
1. What is the best upgrade option for my kit lens 18-55mm Canon? (T3i)
-Looking for much sharper and speed lens
-Looking for Tamron/Sigma because of their low price.

2. I have Canon 50mm f1.8, I am thinking to have Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro also. When I go thru many blogs it appeared that 100mm Macro can also be used as portraits. Is it true? If so, if I just have one lens e.i 100mm f2.8 Macro, does it cover what 50mm f1.8 could?

Please help to make a decision on this.

Thanks!
Ravi.

Ravi - I wish I could! There is just too many options that might be suitable depending on your circumstances. After the New Year I'm intending writing a few blog posts on lenses - looking at some of the lenses out there and how to narrow down your options (with some choices) It will be a lot more informative than what I would be able to say here. Sorry, that's not very helpful right now I know!

Fabulous photos well done! Can't believe you managed to get all of them in one sitting!

Ps were you in one shot or Ai servo mode for these?

Thanks! I was in one shot actually but perhaps Al Servo would have been better!
