Photography For Moms

Photography for moms is an amazing hobby. Although my interest in photography was sparked many years ago, it wasn't until I became a mom that my passion for it was truly ignited. My desire to beautifully document my sons childhood prompted me to really learn my camera and what I could do with it, so I could do this to the very best of my ability.

That is why this blog was created - to help other moms who had the same goal of capturing all those amazing moments that make up their everyday lives.  I believe that photography for moms is slightly different than other forms of photography, and it is this uniqueness that I wanted to express, teach and share in this blog.  Although I love a good portrait shot for hanging on my walls, I also want to remember the things my son and I do everyday and the little moments that make me laugh.  I have hard drives full of these little moments because I want to be able to look at my photos in twenty years time and be flooded with memories of our lives as a family.   And I want to encourage other moms to do the same.

Your kids will not be children forever - in fact, they will be all grown up far too soon, before you even realise it's happening. You'll think you’ll remember it all as the years pass, but let’s face it – we'll forget a lot, especially the little things. It worth bearing in mind that preserving these memories is not just for you - your kids's memories of their childhoods will be sketchy at best, especially of their younger years, but you have the ability to capture those moments in a photograph NOW and keep them for the future for both you and them. At the very root of photography is the desire to make a moment in time last forever, so my challenge to you is to document these precious times whilst you can.

It is my hope that I can help you to achieve this with some tips that are specific to moms. Although there are a lot of sites out there providing photography tutorials, I wanted this site to be more informal, with less theory and less jargon. More like we are sitting down to a cup of coffee together and I'm just answering your questions or giving you advice - no technical stuff or boring concepts. (It has been lovely to hear so many of you say that you have had a "a-ha" moment here on the blog and I sincerely hope that it continues!) I also want to spend some time showing you not just how to use your camera, but also some tips and tricks for documenting your life and creating beauty from the everyday.

As moms, I also believe we should also be USING the photos we take, either to put on display around the home, or to share with friends or family - or at the very least even just to make sure these are stored safely for us to view later.  So there will be more ideas and tips about what to do with all those precious images you have been taking coming up on the blog soon. I want to inspire you to get your photos off your hard drive and into your life! To that end, there is a new category on the right hand side of this blog "Using Your Photos"

Some of you might have noticed that I have photography for moms as part of the blog title.  This is what I'll be doing more of - showing moms how to beautifully document their days and prompting them into doing just that. I want to give you the tools you need to help make your memories as beautiful and as special as they can be, and to preserve them for the generations that follow us.

If you haven't already, be sure to subscribe to our feed either in a reader or via email, and "like" the Facebook page (I'm working on a new freebie for you which will be available exclusively to all facebook fans soon!)

For those of you that are new to the site, you can find some links to posts in the FAQ section, and this recent post rounds up some photography tutorials that you may find helpful.  If you've been around awhile, I hope you've enjoyed what we've covered so far, and I'm so excited to spending another year sharing tips with you - I hope you are too!
