Although I'm a big fan of lifestyle photography, I also like to occasionally use backdrops to lose some of the clutter in the house and create a more polished photograph, and I know many of you are the same. However, I definitely don't want to spend a fortune on creating a mini home studio for the occasional picture! So, when Pacon asked me to review their new line of inexpensive photography backdrop paper I could hardly refuse....
These are seamless paper rolls, that have designed specifically for use with children or family photography (although you could also use these for other uses, such as product or food photography) The paper rolls are 4ft wide, which is about the right size for individuals or siblings, and they are 12ft long, which will last you quite a while.
Setting this up is pretty simple - you can see some ways to do this on Pacon's website here. I don't have a backdrop stand, so I used two dining rooms chairs to hold the paper which worked out fine. I didn't use the pole as suggested on the website, just literally draped it over the back of the chairs - here's a pull back of my not so professional set up. (The Angry Birds are there as bait)
It was insanely easy to set up. Just position your chairs in an area where you have great natural light and you are done! Here are a few of the resulting photos....
I fully intend setting this up again, but this time putting the wood roll down on the floor on a FLAT surface (I did use it but put it on a rug - not a great idea) and buying a wood trim to give it a more polished look - like this, minus the stand and light:
Quality wise, the paper is deceptively strong. When I first pulled it out I thought it was quite thin, and pretty sure it would rip easily, however, it stood up to some pretty rough handling by my son without tearing or creasing so I was pretty impressed with the durability - particularly the floor one which he was jumping all over.
Here's the four I received (Vintage Wood, Classic Damask, Dots – Soft Pink and Dots – Baby Blue), and there are a couple of other options on their website.
If you are looking for an easy, inexpensive solution for creating a studio "look" at home, you won't go far wrong with these. They are very purse friendly at around $10 each, and you can buy them at Mardel or Hobby Lobby, or you can get a carton of four (with the ones you see above) from Amazon at around $35. (If you live in the UK, you can also buy them all at Amazon UK or Mardel also ship to the UK)
Pacon have also kindly provided some items for THREE lucky winners! One winner will receive a $25.00 Hobby Lobby Gift Card (where Ella Bella can be purchased) and the other two winners will each receive one carton containing four paper rolls in the designs seen above. So, that's three winners, with one gift to each winner. To enter follow the instructions in the Rafflecopter widget below (please note the terms and conditions are at the bottom of the widget) Giveaway closes on the 29th of January at 12am EST.
